The four axes

Every idea is scored from 0–10 on four independent axes, each estimated by hand, not derived from a model or a market-sizing template:

  • Profitable likelihood — how likely this specific idea is to become a paying product, given the buyer, the willingness to pay, and how crowded the space already is.
  • Profit potential — if it works, how large the business could realistically get: ceiling, not floor.
  • World importance — how much it matters that this problem gets solved well, independent of whether Railgun is the one to profit from solving it.
  • Difficulty (shown inverted, as ease = 11 − difficulty) — how hard the MVP would be to build and ship, given what Railgun already has: engineering complexity, regulatory exposure, and operational load.

The default formula

The catalog's default ranking weights profitability twice as heavily as raw importance or ease, because a product that never makes money never gets to matter:

This is computed once at build time for every idea and is what the dataset'srankfield reflects. It is not the only lens worth using, which is why the weights are adjustable above.

Adjustable weights and presets

Dragging a slider recomputes every idea's overall score and re-sorts the table live, in your browser — nothing round-trips to a server. The four weights don't need to sum to 1: the score is a weighted average of the four 0–10 axes, normalized by the sum of the weights you've set, so the result stays on a comparable 0–10-ish scale whether you've pushed every slider to the top or dropped three of them to zero. The named presets (Profit-maximizing, World-changing, Quick wins, Balanced) are fixed weight combinations chosen to visibly reorder the table toward a particular question — "what makes the most money," "what matters most if it works," "what could ship soonest" — rather than a single verdict on what to build.

Where the data comes from

Each idea, its buyer, revenue model, MVP scope, strategic thesis, and primary risk were hand-authored — not generated per row — and the scores are estimates, not measurements. Treat this as a structured starting point for a conversation about what Railgun should build, not a verdict. Ties in the default ranking break by entry order, oldest idea first.
